About zinc, nickel & alloys scrap

Zinc turns up mainly as die-castings — carburettor bodies, hardware, toy and fitting castings — and as by-products of galvanising: dross, ash and skimmings from hot-dip plants. Galvanising by-products are bought on assay because the recoverable zinc percentage varies widely between plants.

Nickel-bearing scrap includes nickel alloy offcuts, plating anodes, monel and inconel from process industries. These are specialty materials and are almost never worth selling in a mixed stainless load; they are analysed and quoted individually.

If you are not sure what an alloy is, do not guess and do not sell it as mixed metal. Send a photo and we will identify it, then quote against the actual composition.

We sort and weigh each grade separately in front of you rather than averaging a mixed load down to its lowest rate.

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting zinc, nickel & alloys scrap.

Recoverable metal percentage

Dross and ash are quoted on assayed zinc, not gross weight.

Alloy grade

Nickel alloys vary widely in value by exact composition.

Contamination

Flux, oxide and refractory content reduce recovery.

Quantity

Specialty lots are usually quoted per consignment rather than per kilogram.

Get the better grade

  1. Keep galvanising dross and ash in separate labelled drums.
  2. Provide any mill certificate or grade marking you have for alloy offcuts.
  3. Do not mix specialty alloys into a stainless or general non-ferrous load.
  4. Photograph any grade stamping on the material before it is cut up.

Refined into new zinc ingot for galvanising, and nickel alloy back into specialty melting.

Can you identify an alloy for me?
Yes. Send a photo of any stamping plus the application, and for larger lots we bring an analyser to the site.
Do you take small quantities of nickel alloy?
Yes, though small lots are usually best brought to the branch rather than collected.
