CI stands for Cast Iron — a distinct, heavier grade of iron from castings such as pump bodies, engine blocks, pulleys and machine bases. It is graded and priced separately from general (mild steel) iron scrap.

Is cast iron paid more than normal iron?

It is paid at its own rate, which is usually different from general iron. We grade and weigh CI separately so you see exactly what that portion earned.

Do you buy engine blocks as scrap?

Yes. Engine blocks are a common CI heavy grade. We can drain and dismantle them on site, and any aluminium, brass or copper fittings recovered are weighed and paid at their own higher rates.

Do you collect CI borings from machine shops?

Yes, on a regular cycle. We can supply bins and collect weekly or monthly with a consolidated settlement.

Can you remove a heavy machine base from inside a factory?

Yes. Heavy castings are part of our industrial clearance work — we bring lifting equipment and handle the removal.

About cast iron (ci) scrap

Cast iron behaves differently from steel in a furnace, so foundries buy it as a distinct feedstock. That is why we grade it separately: a load of pump bodies and pulleys sold as CI earns more than the same weight tipped in with mixed household iron. If you are unsure, tap the piece — cast iron rings dull and chips rather than bending.

Machine shops generate CI in a second form: borings and turnings from boring, facing and grinding operations. These are bought by weight but graded down for oil, coolant and any steel swarf mixed in, so keeping CI swarf in its own bin genuinely changes the settlement.

Engine blocks, gearbox casings and pump housings usually still contain oil, bearings, gaskets and sometimes aluminium or brass fittings. We can dismantle these on site, and the non-ferrous parts recovered are weighed and paid at their own higher rates.

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting cast iron (ci) scrap.

Casting weight

Heavy sections are the premium CI grade; thin castings grade lower.

Oil and coolant

Wet, oily borings lose value; drained material is worth more per kilogram.

Mixed metals

Steel shafts, bearings and bolts inside a casting are deducted or sorted out.

Sorting effort

Pre-sorted CI is quoted directly; mixed loads are graded after we separate them.
