Mild steel is the everyday structural steel behind gates, grills, frames, pipes and fabricated assemblies. It is the single largest category we collect and is graded by thickness and how clean the metal is.

About mild steel (ms) scrap

Mild steel scrap arrives from two directions: new production offcuts from fabrication shops and old material from demolished or replaced structures. New offcuts — sheet trimmings, rod ends, channel and angle cuttings — are clean, uniform and command the better MS rate. Old material such as gates, shutters, window frames and roofing sheet carries paint, rust and often wood or glass, so it is graded lower and quoted after inspection.

Thickness matters more than most people expect. Heavy sections above roughly 6 mm melt efficiently and are graded separately from light sheet and tin-thickness material, which loses more weight to rust and burn-off. If your load mixes both, we sort and weigh the grades separately in front of you rather than averaging everything down to the lowest rate.

For workshops we can place a bin on site and collect on a fixed cycle, which keeps offcuts off the shop floor and gives you a monthly settlement instead of ad-hoc sales.

What we cannot take

  • Sealed drums, cylinders or tanks that held fuel, oil, gas or chemicals
  • Steel with concrete or masonry still bonded to it in bulk
  • Radioactive-marked, ordnance or defence-marked material
  • Steel contaminated with asbestos sheeting

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting mild steel (ms) scrap.

Thickness

Heavier sections melt with less loss, so they carry a better rate than thin rusted sheet.

Rust and paint

Heavy scale, thick paint and pitting all reduce recoverable metal per kilogram.

Attachments

Wood, rubber, concrete, glass and plastic left on the steel are deducted as tare.

Load size

Full-truck loads are quoted differently from a few hundred kilograms of loose material.

Get the better grade

  1. Keep fresh workshop offcuts separate from old rusted material — they are two different grades.
  2. Remove wooden planks, rubber beading, glass and concrete before weighing.
  3. Cut long sections to a loadable length if you can; it reduces handling time on site.
  4. Never send closed tanks or drums without cutting them open and confirming they are clean.

Where it ends up

Re-melted into billets and rolled back into rods, sections and sheet at steel mills.

MS rates move with mill demand and change week to week, so we do not publish a fixed number. Send photos and the approximate weight on WhatsApp and we will quote the current rate for your grade.
Do you buy small quantities of MS scrap?
Yes. Small loads can be dropped at either branch, and free pickup is arranged once the quantity reaches our eligible threshold for your area.
Will you cut and dismantle the steel yourself?
For structures, sheds and heavy fabrication we bring our own cutting team and equipment as part of a clearance quote.
