About cables & wires scrap

Every cable has a recovery percentage — the proportion of its weight that is actually conductor. Heavy single-core power cable might recover well over half its weight in copper; a thin multi-core data cable in thick sheathing recovers a small fraction. We estimate the recovery for each type in your lot and quote against that, which is why cable is graded by type rather than tipped on a scale as one heap.

Armoured cable adds a steel wire layer that is stripped and sold as ferrous, and some cable uses an aluminium conductor rather than copper — visually similar, materially very different in value. We identify these at intake and show you which is which.

Two rules are absolute. We never burn insulation and we do not buy from anyone who has: burning is illegal, releases dioxins, and downgrades the copper. And for utility, railway, telecom or contractor cable we require documented ownership before purchase, because these are the most commonly stolen scrap items in the country.

We sort and weigh each grade separately in front of you rather than averaging a mixed load down to its lowest rate.

What we cannot take

  • Any cable that has been burnt to remove insulation
  • Live cable or cable still connected to a supply
  • Utility, railway or telecom cable without documented ownership
  • Oil-filled and paper-insulated high-voltage cable without prior arrangement

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting cables & wires scrap.

Recovery percentage

Conductor weight as a share of gross weight is the whole basis of the rate.

Conductor metal

Copper-cored cable is worth several times an aluminium-cored equivalent.

Insulation thickness

Heavy sheathing means more dead weight per kilogram of metal.

Steel armour

Armour is stripped and paid separately at the ferrous rate.

Get the better grade

  1. Never burn insulation — it is an offence, it is dangerous, and it lowers the copper grade.
  2. Sort by cable type; a graded lot always beats one mixed heap.
  3. Mechanically strip heavy cable only if the quantity justifies the labour.
  4. Bring ID and, for contractor or utility material, the works order or authorisation.

Where it ends up

Granulated to separate copper from plastic; copper is refined for new cable and the plastic is re-compounded.

Should I strip the cable myself?
Only mechanically, and only when the volume makes the labour worthwhile. For small quantities it usually is not worth it.
Why do you refuse burnt cable?
Burning insulation is illegal and releases toxic emissions, and the resulting copper is downgraded anyway. There is no upside.
What ownership proof do you need?
Photo ID for all sellers, plus a works order or authorisation letter for contractor, utility or company cable.
