About pet bottles scrap

Recyclers pay most for clear, uncoloured PET because it can be turned into fibre or new bottles without a colour penalty. Green, blue and brown bottles are recycled into darker products and are graded below clear. Sorting by colour before selling takes very little time and changes the settlement noticeably.

Caps and rings are usually polypropylene, a different polymer, and labels are often PVC or PE film. High-volume collectors are expected to remove them; for household quantities we handle it at the yard. Either way, bottles that still hold liquid are refused — the weight is water, and it contaminates the rest of the load.

Canteens, event venues, gyms and schools generate PET in bursts. For these we set up a bagged collection so bottles are compressed at source rather than transported as air.

What decides the rate

Rates move with the market, so we do not publish fixed numbers. These are the factors we assess when quoting pet bottles scrap.

Colour

Clear PET pays above green, blue and brown.

Caps and labels

Non-PET caps, rings and film reduce the recyclable fraction.

Moisture and residue

Liquid left in bottles is dead weight and contaminates the load.

Compression

Crushed and bagged bottles transport far more efficiently than loose ones.

Get the better grade

Empty and drain every bottle before bagging it.
Sort clear from coloured — it is the easiest value gain in plastic.
Crush bottles flat and bag them so a vehicle carries weight, not air.
Keep any container that held chemicals or pesticide out of the stream entirely.
